As I just posted, it's come to my attention that some random foreign countries and locations have been viewing my blog repeatedly lately. Eric and I dont know anyone in Puerto Rico, Japan, or Australia, and while we know a few folks in Canada, there is no reason for them to be viewing our blog. A few other locations in the United States have been viewing the blog and clicking on my pics. I cant imagine why anyone would need or want to click to enlarge a picture of OUR child, especially strangers or people who are clearly not welcome in our lives, but the time has come for the blog to go private.
Unfortunately, Blogger's private blogs are only allowed a certain number of viewers who have to log in via email address and password. I have gone private before and had requests from well over the 100 person limit set by Blogger, and I felt bad so I made the blog public again. However, the fact is, there is nothing to see here folks. Just pictures of our little girl and our daily life. No need to let the whole world see how fun or boring we are on a regular basis.
Dont get me wrong. I LOVE all the nice comments and the fact that Whitney has touched so many hearts, and admit that it does stink that a few bad apples and weird blog stalkers will ruin the fun, harmless stalking for everyone else. But I have to do what is safe and right for our little girl and our family and after a morning and afternoon spent reading responses to my previous post, Im realizing that most people who read here dont comment, so this little blog that I thought was being read by MAYBE 20 people, has apparently been read over 3,000 times in the last month, and I am half humbled and half freaked-the-heck-out!
Ive made the mistake of putting a lot of our family details out there for the world to see. Maybe I'll go private here and open up shop with some anonymity elsewhere, in a more secure location. I have this weird attachment to the katbass blogspot location, but it is a no-brainer to let it go and move on in privacy when I think things get even a litttttttle bit strange.
I think I had a lot of readers from our fertility days, which makes sense because I know I was always searching for support and success stories in other blogs about fertility. Then, I think some of those folks followed us through our adoption process in hopes of a positive outcome. That, too, makes sense to me, as I know I follow several blogs going through pregnancies or adoptions or even homeschooling, I want to see "how they end" or how they turn out. But now that we arent in the midst of fertility treatments or adoptions or medical mysteries, there is truly no good reason to share "our story" with the entire population of the planet. If there was a surefire way to block IPs or to block entire countries where we dont know anyone personally, then I'd be open to those options. But until blogger invents those security options, we need to do what we can.
Blogging has helped me keep a nice, neat scrapbook for our family. I LOVE that Eric printed the entire blog for me for Christmas last year, and I love that we have a written record of our life before Whitney and as her parents. But Im realizing that it really needs to be just for family and close friends (and even friends and family of close friends!). I appreciate the support and virtual hugs through the years, and wouldnt change anything for the world! Thanks so much for following and dont take it personally :) There are a few of you who will think this is directly related to you or something you said or did. Trust me. Its not. I just think its gone past the point of being a fun place to share our lives when people are randomly clicking on pictures of my kid. I have to wonder "are they saving them to their computers? why? what could they be doing with these pictures? why do they visit every.single.day? And why do they come through the same friend's blog every single day? Why is Whitney's life so interesting to people we've never met?"
Creepy. Stalkers. Not cool. Im sure 99.9% are harmless girls like me, just looking for parenting ideas or entertainment while bored at work. But its the .1% that I dont know about or who arent willing to riase their hand and say "Im here!" that sorta worry a Mama.
So...after a nice, long chat with Eric and after talking with Whitney's birthparents and our own families, I have decided to lock it all up as tight as the internet allows, and continue blogging entirely selfishly and for ourselves alone. So thanks again for everything through the years! Dont be afraid to ask for permission to read in the future....but dont be hurt or angry if I have to say 'no' in order to make sure our family gets first dibs.
(Leaving this post up for a bit, to notify family and anyone who wants to know how/where to keep following. Just leave a comment or email me and I'll keep you posted!)
*edited to add: if you have me on your blogroll, please delete me. Or if you see my blog linked on another blog, please let me know.

Since I can catch up with you on Facebook, I'll go that way to see how W is growing up. Nothing wrong with locking things down when the going gets weird.
Eek.... that is sort of creepy! I don't blame you. I've often thought about starting a blog, but have always thought I'd keep it just for myself. Of course I'd love to continue following your blog, but I totally understand if you select otherwise. It's been great to read about your journey and I've just loved watching Whitney grow- she's such a doll.
I totally understand your wanting to protect your family! Makes sense to me! I have been reading for awhile, and I'm pretty sure I've commented a couple of times. No idea how I found your blog originally.
I am a teacher, and I just like to follow blogs of mommies who are similar to me. I love kids and babies, but I don't have any of my own since I'm not married quite yet...
I love Whitney's love of all things Disney! I'm a Disney girl myself, and I love taking my best friends nephews there. They are still scared of the characters, though, so it's such fun to see Whitney's joy!
If you will let me follow along, I'd love to. If you don't have room for me, I understand. Thanks!

Oh.... and I'm in Maryland (it's probably me- although I usually just read through my reader, so who knows)!
So scary Kat. I dont blame you...I have a blog that isn't my lame design one it has my kiddos plastered all over it...I've thought a million times I should go private...maybe I should since I have my other blog that doesn't (until today) have kid pics...
Guess I should have done the same LONG ago! I dont know what the blogger stats thing is....care to fill me in? Facebook or blog where ever you'd like...I dont have you linked by the way! Thanks for being a great example of protecting your family! Such a good mama!
If there is room I would love to read your blog

Now you have me creeped out, since I have no clue how to see who is or isn't looking at my blog.
Hey Kat:
I"m the MI stalker I remember you from way back on the AB and JM boards I've watched you go through fertility issues, the adoption stuff and now onto the wonderful journey of being a mom. I love/loved watching and catching up but I totally understand your need for privacy, I've kept in touch with only a few from both sites. Just know we all love your stories and the fact that you have been able to be such a wonderful MOM.....going through fertility issues myself I always felt I could relate to you. Your Whitney is almost the same age as my baby girl so I always find some of the things your little girl is doing simply amazing, you're a GREAT mom and I wish you nothing but the best:)
I am sorry the creepers are ruining it for you! If you have room for me on that list of readers great, if not, best wishes to you and your little family!
I took you off my blogroll :o)
Sorry that things have gotten weird and you now have to go private I have really enjoyed following you through your journey and would love to be able to but understand if that is not possible.
mommybbabies@aim.com is my email.

Kat I do not blame you one bit! You know if there is space that Belah and I would LOVE to be able to read your blog and look at all the cute pictures! Even though I might not comment all the time But I do enjoy and respect you and your Blog.
You have to do what is best for your family. Its nice that you where thoughtful enough to explain why you wanted to make it private. I know I'm not in the few who will be able to see the blog and I wouldn't dream of asking to be added later. You need to share your daily life with those who are really close to you. I wish you guys the very best and enjoy the journey with Whitney.
It has been nice knowing you and your family. You no longer have me on facebook, so I guess this is goodbye. Hope you and your family have a wonderful life and it is filled with lots of memories together.
Be warned however, that the internet is foreever. There will always be a google cache image of your blog, even if it is private. There is also something called the "way back machine" that allows people to search older sites. Just giving you a heads up!
Best of luck to you and your beautiful family!!
well sucky! I hate when just a few ruin it for a bunch! BOO! Let me know on FB if you have room for me! :) You know I follow your blog.

Don't blame you one bit! Whitney comes first. I would consider locking mine up but I've had about 300 hits in 2.5 years lol and most of those are me! You will just have to put videos of Whitney up on FB from time to time so we can see her cuteness!
You need to do what is best for you and your family :) I do enjoy coming here and reading about the Whitterbug's adventures, but I will catch up with you in facebook :)
Norma
Makes me sad, but do what you need to do:(
Hey! I must be your Puerto Rico visitor! I've been following your blog for a while and comment every now and then... you're on my favorites list :-)
We have a boy and a baby girl, both adopted domestically, and I have LOVED reading about Miss W's adventures. From your stories, I got the idea to set up a "preschool area" in our den, and though I have failed miserably at teaching our 12 month old shapes and colors, our 5 year old loves to show off for everyone who asks about our little school.
Thanks for sharing a bit of yourselves with the rest of us. Blessings!
That is so nuts!! I can't believe that is happening! I will be sad not to see what's going on with you, but I get plenty from facebook! :)
How scary that people are clicking on your pictures. Katie and I love reading your blog but we can catch cute little Whitney on FB. I wish you the best with the creepy stalkers :(

Hi Kat: It's Maria from the old Hot Mama's and AB site. I have so enjoyed watching your journey through what so many of us went through on that site to seeing your joy with Whitney! I would like to be able to continue, if you have room, but if you don't then I understand. I'm in Missouri, so those clicks are from me! Anyway, hopefully will see you again, and if not, then enjoy every second with her, they get big too fast!
I've been reading your blog ever since I found it through an adoption google search- long before you adopted Whitney. Another harmless girl here with 3 kids myself.
I live in Texas. I do not have your blog on my blog roll. I do view your blog using google reader. I check my g. reader several times a day. If I have ever clicked on a photo from your blog it was by accident while using my touch screen phone. I do not remember how I found your Blog. I am an adoptive mom myself. After our adoption I started searching for foster and adoption blogs. I have enjoyed reading similar stories like ours . I so understand why you have to make a decision to protect your child. Good luck.
Aww I hate that its come to this. I guess I would get creeped out too seeing so many people you don't know checking your blog everyday. I remember you from AB/JM/the new JM. You had posted your blog address up when you guys were ttc and I started following. I tried adding you to fb one time, but didnt' get accepted. I understand though..........it was probably after some drama on one of the boards and you were deleting yourself.....lol I wish your family all the best!!! Take good care of that cutie!!
