Meet our Elf on the Shelf, Booker:
Booker brings 24 wrapped Christmas books on December 1st, and Whitney gets to open one book each day until Jesus' birthday. The books are all books from my childhood or books we already owned, so I didnt have to spend any money to make Booker's appearance grand. Just some $1 Spot wrapping paper :)
Im not sure Booker will stick around year after year, but I wanted to be sure to document his adventures during his first appearance as Booker Bass.
At 9pm every night....for the whole month of December....an alarm on my phone would sound and the words "Booker Time!" would pop up on my phone. Some nights we would already have a plan of attack and know what Booker was getting into that night......
....other nights, we played 'rock, paper, scissors" to determine who was executing the plan or coming up with something cool and fun for Booker to accomplish overnight.
Whitney liked Booker. I dont know that she loved him, or really cared if he was here forever or gone tomorrow. But the ONE day we didnt pull off a Booker stunt wouldve been the ONE day she wouldve missed him and made a big deal about him.
So we trudged on.
The concept is fun. Sorta. Booker is watching to make sure the kids behave all day and then he reports back to Santa, who then places names on the Naughty list or the Nice list.
Eh.
We try to stick to the whole "God is watching" theory since Christmas is about Jesus' birth, and you dont just have to obey and behave for the month of December.
But we might let Booker come back next year....when I have a toddler boy terrorizing the house :)
In the end, it was fun for me and Eric (most nights) and anything that adds a little magic to the season cant be bad, right? :)
