We have called Whitney "Whitterbug" since the first days she was in our home. As she grew, Whitterbug has transformed into "Whitter" and "Bug" and "Buggy". I think I call her "Bug" more than I actually use her real name!
She has always loved LADY bugs, and was so, so, soooo excited when her Papa and Ms. Martha got her a Lady Bug Land for her birthday!
We followed the directions, ordering the lady bug eggs and awaiting their arrival in the mailbox!
Then we fed them raisins and gave them water and waited.....a long time.
We watched and watched......
....and waited and waited....
And finally the ugly larvae stage was over, and these cute, fun lady bugs appeared!
We let them hang out in their fun "lady bug land" for a few days, but then it was time to let them go into the wild.
Oh the tears!
After some lengthy discussion about where these lovely bugs would go once they left our hands, Whitney finally let her lady bugs go in the grass in our front yard. We watched them walk away, and several made their way back out of the grass and onto our clothes or legs or hands!
Grady may or may not have squished one, but we were fairly certain it was "just playing dead". Which was a surprisingly accurate theory, as we learned in the book Papa and Ms. Martha also gave Whitney! Who knew lady bugs play dead to convince their potential attackers to go away?!
This was such a fun experience! We will definitely be ordering more lady bug eggs when the weather stays warm a bit longer. :)
THANK YOU, PAPA AND MS. MARTHA!!!!
